For over 200 years, Johnson City has been the center in the region for education, healthcare, and commerce. Located in three counties in Northeast Tennessee, Johnson City is mainly in Washington County and has a population of about 56,000. Johnson City is a lovely city with plenty of unique character
which ranked it at #10 on the “Best Small Places for Businesses and Careers” list in Forbes magazine.
The region surrounding Johnson City is steeped in history, and in fact, the area that is Johnson City once was part of an autonomous, independent territory that left the Union and was later called the State of Franklin. Leaders campaigned from 1784
to 1788 to have the State of Franklin admitted into the Union,
which would have made it the fourteenth state prior to Tennessee becoming a state in 1796, however their efforts failed and the State of Franklin eventually dismantled and was absorbed into the larger state of Tennessee just before the turn of the 19th century.
 Later, Johnson City flourished as a railroad depot and was the headquarters for the East Tennessee and Western North Carolina Railroad (ET&WNC) and the Clinch-Field Railroad as well. Known as Johnson’s Depot, Johnson City quickly became an economic center, and during
prohibition was nicknamed Little Chicago as it was believed gangster Al Capone owned a townhouse at Montrose Court, a famous building and now a historic location in Johnson City. Johnson City’s bootleggers and distillers supplied Capone with illegal alcohol and he then shipped and distributed it throughout the Northeast and of course, Chicago.
Maintaining its economic stronghold,
Johnson City has continued to
flourish, and today the city hustles and bustles with a great deal of commerce. Much of the revenue in the city comes from tourism,
however the medical and educational
industries play a valuable role as
well.
