Elizabethton is a scenic town in East Tennessee and is the county seat of Carter County TN. Founded in 1799, Elizabethton is the site of one of the first independent American settlements colonized before the Revolutionary War. Today, Elizabethton is a growing area and the premier region to buy East Tennessee Real Estate. Bordering Johnson City and beautiful Watauga Lake, Elizabethton abounds with interesting things to do, historic old homes, and stunning mountain landscapes. The John & Landon Carter Mansion is a historical fixture in Elizabethton and one of the oldest homes in all of Tennessee. The home was built between 1775 and 1780 and is open for tours and other gatherings. Another beautiful area in Elizabethton is Sycamore Shoals State Historic Area; a beautiful green oasis located in the middle of the downtown region. Several historic events have taken place here, and visitors to the park enjoy touring a model of Fort Watauga, an 18th century fort where the Overmountain Men gathered before their march on to the battle of King’s Mountain. It is here that the Watauga Association, a democratic governing body, was established in 1772. The Watauga Association was the first majority rule system of democracy established in the colonies, and at Sycamore Shoals Historic Area there are several markers and monuments dedicated to this particular governing body.
